about

"Inherent rhythms," a term coined by ethnomusicologist Gerhard Kubik, refers to rhythms that are not heard in any one single part but rather emerge when multiple parts are played together simultaneously; they are therefore in the listener's head, rather than in the music itself. Inherent rhythms often help contribute to a sense of metric ambiguity, providing listeners with multiple equally-viable pulse streams to entrain to. This collection of recorded improvisations, each one based on inherent rhythms, seeks to render tangible the sometimes-wide gap between perception and reality.
